IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Wood is made up of cells, and each cell is made up of cell lumen and cell wall. The pits on the cell wall connect the cell lumens of each cell to form a large capillary system, while the cell wall is mainly composed of microfibers, microfibers are composed of microcolloidal particles, and the voids between microfibers and microcolloidal particles constitute the microcapillary system, and water in wood exists in these two systems. In the capillary system. There are three kinds of water systems: 1. Free water (capillary water), which exists in the cell lumen; 2. Absorbed water (adsorbed water, bound water, cell wall water), which exists in the cell wall; 3. Combined water: which is chemically bound to the cell wall components. They all diffuse vertically and horizontally along the pathway of the system. After the free water in the cell chamber is evaporated, the cell can not absorb water from the air again, thus affecting the weight, burning power, dryness, liquid permeability and durability of wood. Microcapillaries in cells, on the other hand, have the ability to release water from the air, which directly affects the strength and expansion (volume or size changes) of wood, that is, the stability of wood. Hydrated water is very little in wood, so it has no effect on wood properties, so when wood is in a dry state, the evaporation of free water only reduces the weight of wood. The evaporation of absorbed water causes wood shrinkage. If wood shrinkage is not uniform, it will lead to wood cracking and deformation, which will affect the normal use of wood in subsequent processing and the quality of wood products.
